Sunday January 28th - Pride Intact post Lakers Duel

The Dragons were unstoppable!!!

The boys had a trenedous game with two big highlights:

  • A Full Team! Paris "Hussle" joined the game and Derek is back from sick leave. It was great to have the whole team there.
  • All the boys played well - it was a very even scoring, dribbling effort. That had not been so in the past but today Ben, Paris, Derek, and Jameson (Jamie B) played very, very well - and what can we say, we now have a team of 8 superstars!
  • Coach Handley has a shirt! So everyone knows he IS and official coach

Lowlights of the game:
  • Fred Blum was no where to be seen. Rumor had it that Zach and Fred had pink slips on the game, but Fred was not there leaving Coach Amy with a handfull. (of course we love Fred and are only teasing...)
  • Sharing a bench with one of the Convent Kindergarten Girls Teams can be a major distraction for the boys sitting on the bench. Zach kept their heads in the game and I swear the girls were more distracted!
Game next week is at noon (plenty of Superbowl wiggle room) and then two weeks off from games - though we will have practices.

Thanks T for these awesome pictures! - Coach B

Friday January 26th - Great Game Last Week, Pride This Weekend

The Dragons had another tremendous game last weekend - the boys are doing VERY VERY well. I am so proud of them!!

  • They did a much better job of moving the ball down the court quickly which helped catch the other team off guard.
  • Passing is improving - though we have a ways to go.
  • Everyone seems to be having fun!!
Thanks to the moms and dads that are rallying the snacks... let's keep that up.

PRIDE - This Sunday 28th - is against another SHB Kindergarten boys team - the Lakers, Fred Blum and Amy coaching. This should make it extra fun for the boys (and a little pride for the coaches...)

Wednesday January 17 - Things to Practice

We had a good practice yesterday. We practiced moving the ball up the court quickly and passing the ball (both up the court) and when trying to make a basket. We have room to improve here, but it was a very good practice. Patrick Handley is a great ball mover and a real go-getter on the court and Liam is living up to him nickname "Leaping Liam". Alessio (the "A-Man") is a tremendous dribbler, lapping the other boys in dribbling races around the gym.

I am less worried about shooting - they actually shoot pretty well and that will come along. Ben is shooting very well and gravitates to the high-end leather balls... classy kid!

Defensively the boys are great. They are really getting the wristband thing and they steal the ball well (alas, illegal) and full court press well( alas also illegal). Robert W is a superstar defender - honestly he could defend me!

A few things to talk with your sons about that should make everything go better:

1. Pay attention to the coach. Not just because they lose their voices in the loud gym, but we are a team and if the coaches are focusing on you they are not focused on the team.
2. Don't run with the ball -pass or dribble, pass or dribble
3. Pass the ball. Look for your teammates and pass the ball to them.

Welcome Paris Husic (nickname "Hussle") and Robert Wenig!! Paris is a real leaper and moves very fast! Robert, as discussed before is a great defender and a great addition to the team. Everyone has their uniform and we are a full team!

Photos Week One

Game 1 - Not Bad at All for a First Try

Game One

Victory to the Dragons. Well, OK, we aren't allowed to keep score, so by victory we mean - no serious injuries, good learning, and a lot of fun. Unfortunately, our Kindergartners don't know the "no score" rule and I was informed that the score was 12-2 after the game. Which seems about right. Sorry.

It was a tremendous first showing - everybody was energetic and the coaches were pleasantly surprised with the boys skill levels!

Nicknames are forming - so far:
Alessio - The A Man
Derrick - "D" -fense
Liam - Leaper
More to come...

The team showed good speed, a desire to full court press (coaches dream), they stole the ball (which it turns out is illegal) and they even dribbled the ball. Some. Everyone had fun and it turns out that is what counts.
